The billionaire techie serves as the poster-child for present-day innovation and entrepreneurship. Biotech and clean-tech inventors and startups get their share of the spotlight too. There is however, another class of startup whose products and innovations are just as far reaching....

Join OPEN New England, in collaboration with the Harvard Pakistan Student Group, and the South Asian Business Association at Harvard Business School as we present a panel of accomplished veterans from the startup world in the Financial Services industry. These individuals and the firms they represent build products and services that complement or compete with offerings from well known Wall Street operators - without the security blanket that those same firms provide. Branching out on their own, they channel their entrepreneurial passion and their industry skills into startups whose products have potential footprints that may well outsize the largest social networks.

Hassan Ahmed, Co-founder, Alembic

Prior to founding Alembic Global Advisors Hassan was a Managing Director and Global Sector Head for Chemicals Research at HSBC. Previously, Hassan has worked as a senior buy-side research analyst covering the materials space at Brown Brothers Harriman, a senior sell-side research analyst covering the chemical space at Sanford Bernstein, a strategy consultant at the Mitchell Madison Group and a process engineer at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Hassan has won several accolades in research having been ranked #1 Middle East and North Africa analyst by Extel in 2009; #1 US stock picker by FT/Starmine in 2008 and Best Up and Comer in the US chemical sector by Institutional Investor in 2006 and 2008. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from London University and an MS degree in operations research from Columbia University. Hassan currently resides in New York City with his wife and young son. He holds NASD Series 63, 7, 86, and 87 licenses.

Stephen Mattews, Co-founder, Alembic

Prior to founding Alembic Global Advisors Stephen was a Managing Director and Head of the US based Emerging Markets sales desk at HSBC. Stephen was responsible for the distribution of HSBC’s Asian, EEMEA, and Latin American research product within the US. Prior to working at HSBC Stephen worked on the Institutional Sales desk at Banc of America Securities, selling US equities, in both San Francisco and New York. Stephen began his career in the Institutional Sales and Trading training program at Dean Witter Reynolds in New York. In addition to his sales experience Stephen worked on the Equity Capital Markets desk of Hambrecht & Quist in San Francisco. Stephen currently resides in CT with his wife and two young sons. He holds NASD Series 24, 7, and 63 licenses.

Abraham Wons - Partner, The Trieste Group

Abe Wons is partner and Chief Risk Practitioner at The Trieste Group Risk Management Services, a provider of risk management outsourcing services ( subsidiary of The Trieste Group Inc, a financial industry services and solutions company). He is also the founder of A Wons and Associates LLC, a risk management consulting firm specializing in investment and operational risk management in the Investment Management and Brokerage industries Previously, he was the Director of Operational Risk Management at Wellington Management Company and, before that, Director of Investment Risk Management at Ameriprise Financial (American Express Financial Advisors), Director of Investment Controls and Performance & Risk Analytics at Deutsche Asset Management and Director of Risk Management at Zurich Scudder Investments. Mr. Wons contributed to the generation of the Buy Side Risk Managers Forum’s Risk Principles for Asset Managers and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association’s Asset Manager Guide to SAS 70; and has been a speaker at a number of domestic and international industry conferences.

Sami Shalabi, Founder at YallaStartup.com, Staff Engineer at Google

Sami Shalabi is a software inventor and entrepreneur. He has 10+ years of experience building world class software at both small and large business environments. Sami has been working at Google, Inc since October 2007 as a Member of Technical Staff. At Google, he co-founded Google Friend Connect, a service that allows site owners to easily add social features to their site. He is now leading the engineering team and the service is now being using on millions of sites around the world. Sami joined Google after they acquired Zingku, a company he co-founded in 2006. Zingku was a venture backed software company that built a variety of multi-channel (mobile, IM, and web) consumers services. YallaStartup aims to foster innovation and early stage entrepreneurship in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. The goal is to set the right channels and programs to increase the entrepreneurship activity at the youth and early stage levels. It's founders started, advised, fund raised and sold a number of companies in the US and Middle East.
